Description

Joint disease is not a big-dog problem. Large and giant breeds - German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Rottweilers - carry more body weight per joint and are structurally predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, and a large share show clinical osteoarthritis by age seven. Small breeds have their own list: patellar luxation in Yorkies, Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease of the hip, and disc disease in Dachshunds. Cats are the most underdiagnosed of all. Radiographic arthritis is present in most cats over ten, but cats hide it - they jump less, groom less, and hesitate at the litter box rather than limping. Daily joint support is one of the most impactful preventive steps an owner can take for any of them.

Thera-Bites Hip & Joint from Aventix is a Health Canada-registered Veterinary Health Product available in two formulas, each built for the body weight it serves.

Large Dogs: a soft, chicken-and-liver-flavoured chew combining five clinically studied ingredients - Glucosamine HCl, Chondroitin Sulphate, MSM, Vitamin C and Manganese Proteinate - at doses sized for medium and large bodies.

Cats & Small Dogs: a soft 4 kcal chewable tablet pairing Glucosamine Sulphate and Chondroitin Sulphate with Osteol bioactive milk proteins, Manganese and Zinc. The low calorie count matters: three chews a day for a 4 kg cat adds 12 kcal, not 57.

Across both formulas, glucosamine supplies the substrate for glycosaminoglycan production in cartilage, supporting joint cushioning and synovial fluid quality. Chondroitin sulphate blocks the cartilage-degrading enzymes that rise during inflammation and draws water into cartilage for resilience. Manganese activates the enzymes that maintain the cartilage matrix. The large-dog chew adds MSM, a bioavailable organic sulphur source essential for collagen and connective tissue synthesis with COX-pathway anti-inflammatory activity, plus vitamin C for collagen cross-linking. The cat and small-dog chew instead adds zinc, a cofactor in tissue repair, and Osteol, a whey-derived bioactive milk protein studied as a complement to glucosamine and chondroitin in small animals.

Both are soft and highly palatable - a real consideration for a 40 kg dog who resists pills and for a cat who will not be pilled at all.

  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) 50 mg: Collagen synthesis support

Directions for Use

Give orally once daily. The daily dose can be divided into two.

Large Dogs: under 15 kg, 1 chew; 15-30 kg, 2 chews; over 30 kg, 3 chews.

Cats & Small Dogs: cats, 1-3 chews; dogs under 7 kg, 1-3 chews; dogs 7-11 kg, 3 chews.

For pets with active joint disease, most owners start at the top of the dose range for the first 4-6 weeks before settling on a maintenance dose.

Supplement Advisor’s Note:
For dogs already on an NSAID such as carprofen or meloxicam for diagnosed arthritis, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations are generally considered compatible and may allow some dogs to reduce their NSAID dose over time - always under veterinary supervision. Cats have far fewer safe long-term anti-inflammatory options, which is exactly why a daily joint supplement earns its place earlier in a cat’s life than most owners expect. Either way, give it 4-6 weeks at the full dose before judging. Joint supplements build up; they do not work on day three. For cats, watch for the quiet signs of improvement: jumping onto furniture again, grooming the back half, using the litter box without hesitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does it take for joint supplements to work?
A: Allow 4-8 weeks of consistent daily use before evaluating results. Dog owners often notice less stiffness after rest within the first month; in cats, look for returned jumping and grooming.

Q: My dog is 12 kg. Which formula should I use?
A: Either works. The Large Dogs formula at 1 chew per day is the simpler option; the Cats & Small Dogs formula at 3 chews per day gives you a lower-calorie chew if weight is a concern.

Q: Can I use this alongside my pet’s NSAID prescription?
A: Generally yes, but confirm with your veterinarian. This supplement does not replace prescribed pain management.

Q: Does the Cats & Small Dogs formula contain dairy?
A: Yes. Osteol is a milk-protein concentrate. The amount per chew is small, but owners of pets with a known milk-protein sensitivity should check with their veterinarian first.

Q: Is this safe for daily long-term use?
A: Yes, both formulas are designed for ongoing daily supplementation.

Q: Is this registered with Health Canada?
A: Yes, as a Veterinary Health Product (VHP). Each formula carries its own Notification Number on the label.
