Surgical tape is the finishing touch that holds a dressing in place — and its quality matters more than most pet owners realize. A tape that fails lets moisture in, allows the dressing to shift, and can introduce bacteria to a healing wound. 3M Durapore is a premium silk-like surgical tape with exceptional holding power, widely used by veterinarians across North America for securing wound dressings, IV lines, and tube sites.
Durapore's proprietary adhesive bonds firmly to skin and fur while still allowing clean removal without excessive pulling. The fabric backing is water-resistant and breathable, making it suitable for use even in areas prone to moisture. Available in three roll configurations to suit different clinical needs — narrow 0.5 in rolls for precision work, 1 in for general dressing securement, and 2 in for larger coverage areas.
Use Durapore to secure gauze dressings and wound pads, anchor IV or catheter lines, secure splints and lightweight bandages, and hold down the edges of transparent film dressings. For application over fur-covered areas, clip the fur first for better adhesion and easier removal.
Different surgical tapes serve different purposes. Durapore (silk-like, strong) is ideal for high-movement areas and dressings that need to stay put. Micropore (paper, gentle) is better for sensitive skin and frequent dressing changes. Having both types in your first aid kit covers the full range of wound care scenarios. Use adhesive solvent (such as Eaze-Off or Smith & Nephew Remove) to dissolve tape residue without damaging the skin.
What sizes does this come in?
Available in 0.5 in (24-roll box), 1 in (12-roll box), and 2 in (6-roll box) widths.
Will Durapore stick to fur?
Yes — it adheres well to fur but can be uncomfortable to remove from heavily furred areas. Clip fur first for best results and easier removal.
Is Durapore the same as Micropore?
No — Durapore is a stronger, silk-like tape with more aggressive adhesion, designed for areas needing secure hold. Micropore is a gentler paper tape better suited for sensitive skin.
How do I remove tape residue from fur?
Apply a small amount of adhesive solvent (Millpledge Eaze-Off or Smith & Nephew Remove) to the residue, let it sit 30 seconds, then gently wipe away.
