Moist wound healing — the practice of keeping a wound slightly moist rather than allowing it to dry out — significantly improves healing speed and reduces scarring. 3M Tegaderm is the gold standard transparent film dressing used in human and veterinary medicine to maintain the ideal moist wound environment while protecting the wound from contamination and bacterial ingress.
Tegaderm's semi-permeable polyurethane film is completely waterproof on the outside, blocking water, bacteria, and contaminants, while allowing moisture vapour and oxygen to pass through from the wound side. This prevents the anaerobic conditions that promote bacterial growth while maintaining the moisture necessary for optimal cell migration and healing. The transparent film allows wound monitoring without dressing removal — reducing the frequency of dressing changes needed.
Tegaderm is ideal for: superficial abrasions and partial-thickness wounds, post-surgical incision sites once sutures are placed, IV catheter securement, areas where wound monitoring frequency needs to be minimized, and burns and scalds requiring moist wound management. It is not appropriate for infected wounds, wounds with heavy exudate, or full-thickness wounds requiring debriding agents.
Tegaderm works best on clean, minimally exuding wounds. If you see significant fluid pooling under the dressing within 24-48 hours, this indicates the wound exudate volume exceeds what the film can handle — switch to an absorbent dressing (such as Advazorb or Super-Absorb) instead. Change Tegaderm when the edges start to lift, fluid accumulates to the dressing border, or at 5-7 day intervals regardless of appearance.
What sizes are available?
Available in 6 cm x 7 cm (small, for paws and precise sites) and 20 cm x 30 cm (large roll format for wider coverage areas).
Can I put Tegaderm directly on an open wound?
Only on clean, non-infected superficial wounds. For any wound with depth, signs of infection, or heavy exudate, use an appropriate wound contact layer first.
How long can Tegaderm be left in place?
Up to 7 days on clean, low-exudate wounds. Change earlier if fluid accumulates at the edges or if the dressing starts to peel.
