For wounds in areas exposed to water, paw licking, or other sources of moisture, standard paper or fabric tapes fail quickly. 3M Transpore is a waterproof transparent plastic surgical tape engineered specifically for wet and high-moisture environments. It is the standard tape used in veterinary clinics to secure IV catheter sites, drainage tubes, and wound dressings on areas like paws, legs, and lower abdomen that are difficult to keep completely dry.
Transpore's unique perforated plastic backing allows moisture vapour to escape while blocking liquid ingress — preventing the skin maceration that occurs under completely occlusive tapes. The transparent backing allows visual monitoring of the dressing underneath without removal. Its strong adhesive holds even through licking, activity, and incidental contact with water.
Transpore is the best choice for: securing IV catheter sites and drainage tubes, paw wound dressings exposed to ground contact and moisture, abdominal or thoracic wound dressings on dogs that are difficult to keep dry, and any situation where wound inspection through the tape is desirable. It is stronger and more moisture-resistant than both Micropore and Durapore in wet conditions.
The perforations in Transpore are functionally important — they are what prevent the skin irritation and maceration that would otherwise occur under a fully occlusive plastic tape. When applying, stretch the tape slightly as you lay it down to ensure good contact, but avoid pulling so tightly that it constricts. For IV catheter sites, apply a small loop of tape over the catheter line before securing the ends to prevent the catheter from being pulled straight out.
What widths are available?
Available in 1 in (12-roll box) and 2 in (6-roll box).
Can I see through Transpore?
Yes — the clear plastic backing allows you to inspect the wound site or catheter insertion point without removing the tape.
Is it suitable for securing IV catheters?
Yes — Transpore is the most common tape used in veterinary clinics for securing peripheral IV catheters.
