Chronic, infected, and difficult-to-heal wounds present some of the biggest challenges in veterinary wound care. Traditional gauze and non-adherent dressings do little to address the bacterial burden that keeps many wounds from progressing through normal healing stages. Advancis Medical Actilite represents a new generation of active wound dressings — using the clinically proven antibacterial properties of Manuka honey to create an inhospitable environment for bacteria while simultaneously supporting the body's natural healing processes.
Actilite is a non-adherent knitted viscose fabric impregnated with Activon Manuka honey — a medical-grade Manuka honey with a minimum of 18% methylglyoxal (MGO), the active compound responsible for its potent antibacterial activity. Unlike antibiotic-based wound treatments, Manuka honey's antibacterial mechanism works through a combination of osmotic action, hydrogen peroxide production, and low pH — mechanisms that bacteria cannot develop resistance to. Actilite's non-adherent construction ensures atraumatic dressing removal without disturbing the delicate healing wound bed.
Actilite is particularly valuable for: infected lacerations and bite wounds, pressure sores and decubitus ulcers, post-surgical wound dehiscence, chronic non-healing wounds, burns and scalds, and wounds with slough or necrotic tissue. It can be used as a first-line dressing when infection is suspected, avoiding the need for systemic antibiotics in many cases.
Manuka honey dressings work by drawing fluid osmotically from the wound tissue — this creates a moist, slightly acidic wound environment that is highly effective at reducing bacterial counts. Some wound exudate increase is normal in the first 1-2 days as the honey draws fluid — this is not a sign of worsening infection. Change Actilite every 1-3 days depending on exudate levels. For heavily exuding wounds, pair with an absorbent secondary dressing.
Is this different from the Kruuse Manuka honey dressing?
Yes — Actilite has a knitted non-adherent backing that provides both honey delivery and wound contact layer function. The Kruuse dressing uses a different carrier material. Both deliver Manuka honey but suit different wound types and clinician preferences.
Will the honey be licked off?
Actilite must be covered with a secondary bandage to prevent removal and licking. An Elizabethan collar adds additional protection.
Can I use this on a fresh surgical wound?
Yes — Actilite is suitable for post-surgical wound sites, particularly those showing signs of early infection or delayed healing.
