Hairballs are one of the most common feline health concerns, and one that owners sometimes underestimate. While occasional vomiting of a hairball is normal, frequent episodes, hard stools, or visible straining can signal that the digestive transit system needs support. Ingested hair that doesn't pass through can cause discomfort, reduced appetite, and in rare severe cases, intestinal obstruction.
Aventi Hairball & Stool from Aventix is a registered Health Canada Veterinary Health Product — an irresistibly palatable paste formulated to ease the transit of both ingested hair and hard stool through the digestive tract. The malt-flavoured paste is given orally by squeezing directly from the tube, making dosing simple and consistent.
The active ingredient is mineral oil (437 mg per ml of paste), which acts as a gentle, non-digestible lubricant in the GI tract. Mineral oil is one of the most established and time-tested mechanisms for hairball management — it coats ingested hair and dry stool, reducing friction and encouraging passage. Unlike some stimulant-type laxatives, mineral oil does not alter gut motility or electrolyte balance. It simply lubricates. The paste vehicle includes vitamin E as an antioxidant, along with malt, fructose, and plant-based excipients that create the palatable flavour profile most cats find genuinely appealing.

Directions for Use:
Give 2–5 cm (1–2.5 ml) of paste orally per day for 3 to 5 days each month. Can be given more frequently if necessary, but only for 3–5 consecutive days at a time. Apply to the front paw for licking, or offer directly from the tube.
Supplement Advisor's Note:
Mineral oil-based hairball pastes should not be given immediately before or after a meal — give them between meals for best effect, as food can interfere with the lubricating action. Long-term daily use of mineral oil is not recommended without veterinary guidance, as it can interfere with fat-soluble vitamin absorption over time; the monthly 3–5 day dosing regimen avoids this concern. For cats that regularly develop hairballs beyond this schedule, brushing frequency and dietary fibre intake are worth reviewing.
Q: How do I administer the paste to my cat?
A: Apply the paste to the front paw (cats will lick it off), offer directly from the tube, or mix into a small amount of food. Most cats find the malt flavour appealing.
Q: How often should I use it?
A: For regular hairball prevention, 3–5 consecutive days per month is the standard recommendation.
Q: Is this registered with Health Canada?
A: Yes, as a Veterinary Health Product (VHP).
Q: Is this the same as Thera-Bites Hairball & Stool chews?
A: They address the same issue but are different formats. This is a traditional paste applied from a tube, while Thera-Bites Hairball & Stool are soft chews. Choose based on your cat's preference.
