Manuka honey has been used in wound care for millennia, but modern medical-grade preparations have standardized the active compound concentration and application method to make honey's antibacterial properties reliably effective in clinical practice. The Kruuse Manuka Honey Dressing delivers medical-grade Manuka honey through a non-adherent sterile carrier, combining the powerful antibacterial and healing-promoting properties of Manuka honey with the trauma-free removal of a non-adherent dressing.
Manuka honey's antibacterial mechanism is multifactorial — high osmolarity draws fluid from bacteria, low pH inhibits bacterial growth, and the hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal (MGO) compounds provide direct bactericidal activity. Unlike antibiotic-based treatments, this multi-mechanism action means bacteria cannot develop resistance. The dressing is sterile-packaged for use on open wounds requiring the highest infection control standards.
Ideal for: infected lacerations, bite wounds, and fight wounds with contamination; chronic non-healing wounds; post-surgical wound dehiscence and infection; burn wounds; and pressure ulcers/decubitus sores. Can be used as a first-line dressing when bacterial biofilm is suspected.
Unlike the Advancis Actilite (which uses a woven fabric carrier), the Kruuse Manuka Honey Dressing uses a different carrier material — both deliver medical-grade honey but may suit different wound geometries and clinician preferences. For cavity wounds, a honey gel or paste may be more appropriate than a flat dressing. For flat wound beds, both products are clinically equivalent. Choose based on availability, wound shape, and your veterinarian's preference.
Is this different from regular honey?
Yes — medical-grade Manuka honey has standardized MGO and antibacterial activity. Regular honey from a store has variable, unvalidated potency and is not sterile.
How often should I change this dressing?
Every 1-3 days depending on exudate level. More frequent changes for heavily exuding or infected wounds.
