Uncontrolled bleeding is the most immediate threat to survival in traumatic wounds. While direct pressure is the first intervention for any bleeding wound, haemostatic dressings provide the next level of bleeding control for wounds that do not respond to simple pressure alone. Millpledge Haemostem is a professionally formulated haemostatic gauze that actively accelerates the body's natural clotting process to achieve rapid haemostasis in difficult bleeding wounds.
Haemostem works by providing a scaffold for platelet aggregation and coagulation factor activation, dramatically shortening the time required for a clot to form compared to standard gauze alone. It is particularly valuable for: arterial and venous bleeding that does not respond to simple compression, deep cavity wounds, packing of wound channels to achieve haemostasis, and emergency first aid for traumatic injuries before veterinary evaluation.
Apply Haemostem directly to the bleeding wound site and apply firm, sustained direct pressure for 3-5 minutes. Do not lift the dressing to check — this disrupts clot formation. If bleeding continues after 5 minutes of sustained pressure, maintain pressure and proceed immediately to veterinary emergency care. Haemostatic dressings are emergency products, not replacements for veterinary evaluation of serious wounds.
Haemostatic gauze is one of the highest-value items in a veterinary first aid kit — it occupies minimal space but can be life-saving in a traumatic injury situation. The key to efficacy is sustained pressure without lifting. Many first responders instinctively lift the dressing to check progress — this tears the developing clot and restarts the process. Press firmly and do not lift for at least 3-5 full minutes.
Does Haemostem need to be removed from the wound?
The dressing should be gently soaked with saline before attempted removal once bleeding is controlled, to minimize clot disruption. A veterinarian should assess all wounds requiring haemostatic dressing use.
Is this appropriate for home first aid?
Yes — it is an appropriate emergency first aid product for serious bleeding prior to veterinary evaluation.
