Some dogs sleep through a thunderstorm. Others pace, pant, tremble or hide at the first rumble, or shake through every car ride. It is a real stress reaction, with a measurable surge in cortisol, the body's main stress hormone.
ProCalm calming tablets from ProConcepts Animal Health take a simpler approach: a single active ingredient, betulinic acid, in a strength matched to your dog's size.
Betulinic acid is a natural triterpene found in tree bark, including birch and sycamore. Canadian researchers identified it as a key calming compound in a Central American vine used in traditional medicine, and animal studies suggest it acts partly through GABA-A receptors, the brain's main calming pathway.
In a blinded, placebo-controlled study of 60 beagles published in Molecules (2021), dogs received a botanical tablet standardized to betulinic acid or a placebo for five days before hearing recorded thunder. At the intended dose, treated dogs spent significantly less time frozen and more time moving normally, and dogs prone to a cortisol spike after thunder showed a smaller rise.
Follow the package directions for the number of tablets and timing. Check with your veterinarian before use in puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, or dogs on behaviour, sedative or anti-seizure medication.
A dog lying motionless during a storm is often frightened, not relaxed. Freezing is a fear response and a key measure in the betulinic acid research, so judge ProCalm by less freezing, trembling and hiding, not by drowsiness. If your dog panics, tries to escape or injures itself, involve your veterinarian; severe noise phobia often needs a prescription plan.
Choose 5 mg for small dogs and 10 mg for medium and large dogs. If your dog falls between sizes, ask your veterinarian.
Follow the timing on the package. For predictable events like Canada Day fireworks, plan ahead: in the published research, dogs were dosed once daily for five days up to and including the noise test.
Both combine L-theanine with a colostrum-based calming complex and are made for dogs and cats. ProCalm is dog-specific, built on a single botanical active dosed by tablet strength.
