The liver is one of the most metabolically active organs in the body — responsible for detoxification, bile production, protein synthesis, glycogen storage, and processing virtually every drug or supplement a pet receives. Dogs and cats with liver disease, hepatic lipidosis, copper storage disorders, or those on long-term hepatotoxic medications benefit significantly from targeted nutritional support that aids hepatocyte regeneration and reduces oxidative stress within liver tissue.
Rx Vitamins Hepato Support delivers a clinically relevant combination of hepatoprotective nutrients in capsule form. The formula centres on SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) and milk thistle (silymarin) — two of the most extensively researched hepatoprotective agents in veterinary medicine — alongside additional antioxidants that address the specific vulnerabilities of the diseased liver.
SAMe donates methyl groups to glutathione synthesis pathways, directly replenishing intracellular glutathione levels that become depleted in hepatic disease. Glutathione is the liver's primary antioxidant defence; its depletion is one of the mechanisms by which liver damage becomes self-perpetuating. Silymarin (the active component of milk thistle) stabilizes hepatocyte membranes, inhibits inflammatory pathways within liver tissue, and has demonstrated hepatocyte regenerative properties in multiple studies. Together, these two agents address both the oxidative and inflammatory dimensions of liver disease.
Available in 90-capsule and 180-capsule sizes to accommodate different treatment durations and household needs. For long-term maintenance, the 180-capsule size offers better value.
SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) — methyl donor; supports glutathione synthesis and reduces oxidative liver damage. Silymarin (Silybum marianum extract) — flavonolignan complex; stabilizes hepatocyte membranes and inhibits fibrosis. Antioxidant blend — vitamin E, selenium as additional oxidative protection.
Dose by body weight as directed by your veterinarian. Capsules can be opened and mixed into food if whole-capsule administration is not possible. For best SAMe absorption, give on an empty stomach when feasible.
SAMe is notoriously difficult to administer in enteric-coated tablet form — many pets refuse or cannot swallow large tablets, and breaking them destroys the coating that protects SAMe from gastric acid degradation. The capsule format in Hepato Support allows the contents to be opened into food, though this means the SAMe is exposed to stomach acid. For patients where maximum SAMe bioavailability is important, administer as a whole capsule on an empty stomach and follow with a small meal. Silymarin is highly lipophilic and absorbs better when given with a small amount of fat.
