Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a critical water-soluble vitamin for neurological health, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis in dogs and cats. While severe deficiency is most commonly associated with GI disease states affecting ileal absorption, milder insufficiency can occur in older pets, those on restrictive diets, or those with a history of gut disruption.
Rx B12 Original by Rx Vitamins for Pets provides a standard maintenance dose of vitamin B12 in an easy-to-administer liquid format. It is appropriate for ongoing maintenance supplementation in pets with a history of cobalamin deficiency who have already restored levels, or as a daily nutritional complement in pets with known risk factors for insufficiency. Manufactured to NASC quality standards by Rx Vitamins for Pets.
Administer directly into the mouth or mix into food once daily. Follow product label dosing by weight.
The Original concentration is appropriate for maintenance supplementation once serum B12 levels have been restored to normal range — often following an initial period on the Forte concentration or injectable B12. Think of Rx B12 Original as the "maintenance phase" product. For pets with ongoing GI disease (IBD, EPI), continuous B12 supplementation is often part of the long-term management plan, as the underlying absorption impairment doesn't resolve with the disease.
The Original delivers a standard maintenance dose of B12 per mL. The Forte version has a higher concentration for pets with active deficiency or greater supplementation needs. Original is typically used once levels are stabilized.
Healthy pets eating balanced diets generally obtain sufficient B12 from food. This supplement is most valuable for pets with medical conditions affecting B12 absorption or documented insufficiency.
Liquid forms bypass the need for tablet dissolution and can begin absorption in the oral mucosa. For pets with compromised GI function, this delivery advantage matters — though absorption ultimately occurs primarily in the ileum.
Signs can include lethargy, weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting, and in chronic deficiency, neurological signs. A serum cobalamin test is the definitive way to assess levels.
